Specifications
The Profile, the Paperwork and the Handling That Decide the Booking
Your label and your SOP set these. They decide the equipment, the carrier pool and the documentation before anything is quoted.
| Requirement | The specification |
|---|---|
| Controlled room temperature | USP puts it at 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, with brief excursions permitted between 15 and 30 as long as the mean kinetic temperature stays at or below 25. Needs a unit that heats, not a dry van. |
| Refrigerated cold chain | 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Vaccines, insulin, biologics and most reagents. Freezing damages them as surely as heat does. |
| Frozen and ultra-cold | Minus 25 to minus 10 for freezer product. Minus 70 class shipments ride in dry ice or a cryogenic shipper, not on a trailer set point. |
| Protect from freezing | A floor with no ceiling. A liquid biologic that froze has aggregated and is finished, and it looks perfectly clear in the vial. |
| Run mode | Continuous, not start-stop. A cycling unit lets the box drift between set point hits, and that drift shows up on the logger download. |
| Mean kinetic temperature | The calculation that turns several excursions into one number a quality unit can judge against stability data. Not an average. |
| Temperature record | Calibrated logger with a traceable calibration certificate, placed with the product, started before loading, read at the receiving door. |
| Chain of custody | Numbered tamper-evident seal written on the bill of lading, integrity verified and re-recorded at every hand-off, no unscheduled breaks. |
| Supply chain documentation | DSCSA transaction information and transaction statement travel with the product, exchanged electronically between authorized trading partners. |
| Serialization and aggregation | Unit serials roll up to case and pallet. Re-palletize in transit without capturing it and the receiver's scan fails at the door. |
| Device and instrument handling | Air-ride suspension, shock and tilt indicators on the crate, liftgate and inside delivery when the receiving point is a hospital corridor. |
| High-value security | No stop in the first leg out of the shipper, no unattended trailer, team drivers where the stability clock and the exposure justify them. |
| Cross-border into Mexico | Import of drug product and devices runs on the importer's COFEPRIS registration and permits. The physical move is planned around them. |
The equipment
Equipment Here Is Set Point Plus Custody Plus Access
Most of this freight rides in a 53-foot reefer, though often running warm rather than cold: a controlled room temperature load needs the unit's heat enabled and continuous run mode, and a single-temp trailer holds one number across the whole box, so 2 to 8 degree product and ambient product do not share it unless the trailer is multi-temp. Custody drives the mode more than cube does, which is why exclusive-use truckloads under one seal are common on lanes where an LTL cross-dock would break both the seal and the aggregation. Dry ice shipments need ventilation and a count of how many pounds go in, because sublimated carbon dioxide displaces oxygen in a closed van and the ice itself is a consumable with a transit-time limit. Devices and instruments add a second layer: air-ride suspension, shock and tilt indicators on the crate, liftgate service, and inside delivery at a hospital or a lab with no dock at all. Team drivers enter the picture when a stability window or a site activation date is measured in hours instead of days.
