Wound paper and stacked board are denser than almost anything else that rides in a van, commonly in the range of thirty to fifty pounds per cubic foot on the skid, and the fiber itself is denser than that once the voids come out. A pallet of cut-size copy paper or a set of parent rolls will take a standard dry van combination to its legal gross weight, which for most tractor-trailers means a payload in the mid-forty-thousands, with a large part of the trailer floor still bare. Erected corrugated boxes, converted tissue and blown bottles run at a small fraction of that, low single digits per cubic foot. Those loads fill all fifty-three feet, floor to roof, and never come close to a weight problem.
So the first question on any load out of this industry is not the lane, it is which constraint applies. A weigh-out load needs a light tractor and trailer combination and a placement plan, because a dense load can sit legally under eighty thousand pounds gross and still be over on the drives or the tandems if the rolls or skids are concentrated in the wrong part of the deck. A cube-out load needs the full trailer, an accurate dimensional picture, and a partner who prices it on cube rather than on the weight ticket. A shipper who sends a broker twenty thousand pounds of knocked-down cartons with no dimensions gets quoted a partial and then finds out at the dock that the freight fills the truck.
The split shows up hardest in LTL, where classification turns on density for most commodities. This industry ships near both ends of that scale out of one plant: dense rolls and sheets sit at the bottom of the class range, erected boxes and light converted goods several classes higher. Give the carrier a class that does not match the pallet and the shipment gets reweighed and re-dimensioned at the terminal, the invoice gets corrected weeks later, and the pallet sits an extra day while the correction is made. Accurate dimensions and stack height on the bill of lading are worth more on box and print freight than they are on almost anything else.
Paper Is Hygroscopic, and the Damage Shows Up at the Press
Paper does not simply get wet or stay dry. It exchanges moisture with the air around it until it reaches equilibrium, and it leaves the mill conditioned to a narrow band, commonly a single-digit moisture content, then wrapped to hold that band. When the edges of a stack or a roll pick up moisture the fibers swell and you get wavy edges. When the edges give up moisture you get tight edges and curl. Either way the sheet no longer lies flat.
That is the part that costs money, because a sheet that will not lie flat will not hold register. A four-color job goes out of register, a web breaks on the press and takes the run down, ink adhesion suffers, and on a heatset press trapped moisture blisters in the dryer. None of it is visible at the receiving dock. The wrapper looks fine, the skid looks fine, the delivery gets signed clean, and the problem is discovered when the pressroom rejects the roll with the job already scheduled on press.
The sources are ordinary: a trailer with a pinhole in the roof, a floor that is still wet from a wash, standing water at the rear sill, or a load sitting open on a dock in the rain during a transfer. So the trailer condition is a dispatch requirement on paper loads, written into the carrier's instructions instead of assumed: doors closed and the roof checked for daylight, floor dry, no leaks at the seams, seals sound. Skids ride on dunnage where the floor is doubtful. Rolls and baled pulp moving flatbed get tarped, and on those loads the quality of the tarp job matters more than the tarp.
There is one more moisture problem, and it happens after delivery. A roll that traveled a cold lane and goes straight into a warm, humid pressroom sweats under its own wrapper. The fix is conditioning: the roll stays wrapped and acclimates to room temperature before anyone strips it, and the time it needs grows with the temperature difference and the roll diameter. That is why delivery on a paper load is scheduled to the plant's conditioning window, not to the hour the press is booked.
Rolls Roll, and They Have Their Own Securement Rule
The FMCSA cargo securement standard writes commodity-specific rules for only a short list of things, and paper rolls is one of them, at 49 CFR 393.122. The reason is geometry. A cylinder does not need a hard stop to move, and a roll that starts moving under braking does not stop until it hits something.
How it gets secured depends on orientation. Rolls loaded eyes vertical, standing on end, are placed tight against the walls and against each other so nothing has room to walk, with voids filled by blocking or airbags instead of left open. Rolls loaded eyes crosswise, with the axis running across the trailer, want to roll toward the doors every time the brakes come on, so they get blocked or chocked against that movement and banded into groups that behave as one unit, with friction mats under them to keep the assembly from sliding. Stacked tiers add conditions of their own, and a roll on the top tier is never held by its own weight alone.
The consequence of getting it wrong is not only a damaged roll. A loose roll moves the load's center of gravity while the truck is in motion, which is a handling problem before it is a claim. So orientation, roll diameter, width, weight and core size go to the carrier before dispatch, along with whether the shipper loads with a roll clamp and whether chocks, mats and blocking are expected to be on board. A driver who shows up with four straps and no chocks for a set of eyes-crosswise rolls does not get loaded, and that is a wasted appointment at a mill that schedules its doors tightly.
How Paper, Board and Glass Fail in Transit
Rolls fail by shape. Set a roll down hard, store it on its side without support, or squeeze it with a clamp set too tight and it goes out of round, and an out-of-round roll runs with tension variation that breaks the web. Handle it with plain forks instead of a roll clamp and you crush the core, which then will not seat on the chucks. A dented head or a scuffed edge is not cosmetic either, it is where the next web break starts. The handling rules are simple and they are not optional: roll clamp, controlled pressure, and never set on a bare, rough dock plate.
Corrugated fails by losing strength. Almost all of a box's stacking capacity lives in its flutes and its four vertical corners, and both weaken as the board takes on moisture. Move a box from warehouse humidity into the humidity inside a closed trailer on a Gulf Coast lane and it can hold roughly half the compression strength it was engineered around, so a stack that is stable in a dry plant leans and collapses in transit. Overhang past the pallet edge, out-of-column stacking and loosely spun wrap finish what the humidity started. On sheet board and knocked-down bundles the failure is edge crush, and edge crush is not discovered at the dock, it is discovered later when the case erector on the customer's line starts jamming.
Empty glass fails by vibration. Bottle rubbing against bottle across a thousand-mile lane scuffs the sidewall and starts fine checks in the glass. The bottle survives the trailer and looks fine on the pallet, then bursts on the filler under pressure or in the pasteurizer. Prevention is a tight load and nothing else: layer pads between courses, no voids, airbags in every gap, air-ride equipment, and no partial pallet riding loose in the nose.
Print fails by handling. A skid of catalogs is thousands of finished copies and a skid of inserts can run to tens of thousands, and a creased corner or a crushed lift is scrap that cannot be reprinted inside the schedule. These skids are heavy enough that they rarely double stack, so the damage comes from forklifts and restacks, which means it comes from terminal transfers. Print that has to arrive presentable belongs on partial truckload, on the same trailer from origin to the door, rather than through four LTL breaks.
Labels and adhesives fail in the cold, quietly. Pressure-sensitive label stock, hot-melt case adhesive and water-based inks and coatings all have low-temperature limits. A load of label rolls that sat overnight below freezing at a cross-dock can arrive with adhesive that will not tack on the labeling line, and there is nothing wrong with the pallet to look at. If the product sheet has a freeze limit, the load gets protect-from-freeze service or temperature-controlled equipment, and it is asked about before dispatch instead of after the line stops.
Print Has a Date That Cannot Move, Packaging Feeds a Line That Cannot Wait
Commercial print is one of the few freight types where the delivery date is set by something completely outside the plant. A catalog has an in-home date built around a selling season. A retail insert is tied to the day the ad runs. An event program is tied to the event. Deliver any of them a day late and the freight is not late, it is worthless, and there is no partial credit for arriving.
Direct mail adds a second layer, because a large share of it never goes to a post office. Mailers truck the mail themselves into a destination postal facility, an NDC or an SCF, to earn the worksharing discount the job was priced around. Those drops run on scheduled appointments booked through the USPS facility appointment system, and the load travels with the verification paperwork, the PS Form 8125, which is presented at the dock. Miss the appointment window and the facility can turn the truck away, and a drop that is not verified the way it was scheduled does not earn the postage rate the mailing was quoted at. That is a delivery with rules attached, not a freight stop.
Packaging behaves like a manufacturing component, because that is what it is. An empty carton, a preform or a label roll arrives at a filler running to a production schedule, with a receiving window keyed to a line changeover, and often with almost no floor space to store something that bulky. So early delivery is a problem in the same way late delivery is: nobody has anywhere to put forty-eight pallets of boxes two days before the run. The economics are lopsided as well. The freight is cheap and the cargo is low value, but the line it feeds is not, and a stopped filling line costs multiples of the truck that was supposed to feed it.
Food-contact packaging carries one more requirement that catches shippers out. Many food and beverage plants apply the same trailer sanitation standard to inbound cartons, closures and preforms that they apply to the food itself: a washout certificate, prior-load history, no hazardous material in the previous load, a sealed trailer and the seal number written on the bill of lading. That gets settled at dispatch, because a trailer that cannot document its last load does not get unloaded at the gate, and the cartons sitting inside it are the reason the line is idle.
