The Well Sets the Clock, and Nothing on the Truck Changes That

Most freight is scheduled around a receiving door with posted hours. An oilfield material delivery is scheduled around an operation that is already burning money. A rig running casing waits with a full crew on the floor for the next bundle of joints. A frac crew draws proppant continuously while it pumps, and continuous draw outruns any single truck, so deliveries have to be chained: the next one loaded and moving before the one on location is empty. Break the chain mid stage and the crew shuts down, and a shutdown mid stage is a completions problem, not a freight problem. The freight bill is the smallest number in that conversation.

The volumes make it concrete. A single stage can call for a few hundred thousand pounds of proppant, and a multi well pad measures its proppant in the millions of pounds, which is hundreds of loads at roughly 25 tons apiece against a pump schedule that does not pause overnight. Sand does not tip and go either. A pneumatic trailer discharges on air and that takes the better part of an hour on location, so a queue at the sand transfer is not a line, it is the schedule.

The rig side runs the same logic on a different rhythm. Casing is ordered against a drilling program, and drilling programs move. The well reaches section total depth two days early or two days late and the delivery moves with it. Pipe that lands early on a pad with nowhere to lay it down is in the way. Pipe that lands late holds a crew. That is why these lanes get planned around a staging point, yours, the distributor's or one the assigned carrier can hold at, close enough to release a load on hours of notice instead of days.

Location Is a Set of Coordinates at the End of a Caliche Road

The destination has a lease name, a pad name and a set of coordinates, and the last few miles are a lease road, not a public highway. In South Texas that road is caliche. Dry, it holds up fine. After a hard rain it ruts, and a loaded flatbed of casing that finds a soft spot stops being a delivery and becomes a recovery. Ground conditions get confirmed the morning of, not the week before.

The road has to be surveyed for the trailer as well: cattle guards that will take the weight, low water crossings, one lane turns a 53 foot deck cannot make, and a turnaround at the pad wide enough that a loaded truck is not backing a half mile out. Lease road speed is usually held near 15 miles an hour for dust, so the last five miles cost more clock than the previous 300.

The gate has a guard and a sign in sheet, and a driver takes a site orientation before he passes it. PPE on an active location is flame resistant clothing, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves and steel toes, and in sour areas a personal H2S monitor, without which nobody gets in. Locations run a job safety analysis before work starts, so a truck that arrives in the middle of a lift waits until the lift is finished, whatever the appointment said.

Then the part that surprises everyone new to the play: long stretches of it have no usable cell signal. The supervisor needs an hour, not a window, and he needs it while the driver can still be reached. So the arrival hour gets handed off at the last point with coverage and confirmed against the gate, rather than tracked to a dot that stopped moving 20 miles back.

On a Pipe Load the Value Sits in the Two Ends

OCTG arrives as bundles of joints, casing in Range 3 running into the mid 40 feet, tubing in Range 2 near 31 feet, every joint carrying a machined connection at each end under a protector. The connection is the fragile part and, on premium and semi premium threads, a real share of what the joint cost. A galled pin or a dented box means that joint gets laid down at the floor instead of run, and laying one down mid string is not a materials loss, it is rig time.

Threads take damage for predictable reasons. A bundle that can shift lets joints rub, and rubbing works a protector loose. A loose protector lets grit into the thread. Ends that overhang the tailboard take the hit when the load is set down. So the load is built against exactly that: pipe on bolsters with the stakes standing, wood dunnage between tiers, tiers nested rather than stacked square, and the bundle blocked so nothing can roll. Roll is the failure mode that counts, because a joint that gets loose on the highway is not a claim, it is an incident.

The securement math is not a preference. Under the general cargo rules an article longer than 10 feet takes two tiedowns for the first 10 feet plus one more for every additional 10 feet or part of it, and the combined working load limit of those tiedowns has to be at least half the weight of what they hold. A 44 foot joint is five tiedowns before anyone discusses weight. Weight runs out early anyway: 5 and a half inch casing at 20 pounds per foot is around 880 pounds a joint, so a legal load lands somewhere near 50 joints while the deck still looks like it could take more.

Coated line pipe fails a different way. Fusion bonded epoxy is what keeps a gathering line from corroding in the ditch, and it is checked with a holiday detector before lowering in. Every bare chain laid across it, every steel hook on a bevel, every joint set down on unpadded steel is a defect somebody has to find and patch on the right of way. Coated pipe rides on padded bolsters and moves on nylon slings, and hooks stay off the bevels.

Sand, Cement and Stimulation Chemistry Each Fail Their Own Way

Proppant is graded by mesh and the stage design is written around it. 100 mesh, 40/70 and 30/50 are not interchangeable, and the wrong cut delivered into the right silo does not announce itself until it is being pumped. Moisture is the other one. Sand and bulk cement both discharge on air, and damp product bridges in the hopper and will not flow, which turns an hour on location into most of a shift. Bulk tanks are confirmed dry and clean with the carrier before they load, because the last product in that tank is a real question, not a formality.

Cement pre hydrates on contact with moisture and sets up as lumps that never make it through the system. Barite is dense enough, above a specific gravity of four, that a trailer runs out of pounds with the deck half covered, so drilling fluid loads are axle math before they are space planning.

Stimulation and treatment chemistry is where paperwork starts governing the truck. Acid on a spearhead is a Class 8 corrosive, methanol is a Class 3 flammable, and a persulfate breaker is a Class 5.1 oxidizer with segregation rules against the flammables on the same deck. Classification comes from Section 14 of your safety data sheet and it is the shipper who signs it. Once hazardous material on the vehicle passes 1,001 pounds aggregate for most classes the truck is placarded, the shipping paper rides within the driver's reach, an emergency response telephone number has to be monitored the whole time the material is in transportation, and the driver holds the hazmat endorsement backed by a security threat assessment. A driver swap at five in the morning is not a neutral event on this freight.

Winter adds one more. Most oilfield chemistry is water based, and totes of friction reducer, biocide and scale inhibitor sitting on a pad through a hard freeze can come apart. A broken emulsion is off spec product, not slow product, and the crew finds out at the blender. Freeze protection is decided when the load is planned, not when the forecast turns.

Materials or Machinery: Which Page You Actually Need

Deck Choice Comes From the Joint, the Diameter and the Discharge

Flatbed is the workhorse: bundled OCTG, line pipe, palletized product, super sacks and rig mats all ride open deck on bolsters with the stakes standing. Step deck picks up where height runs out, and it runs out sooner than people expect, because a standard deck leaves you roughly eight and a half feet of freight under a 13 foot 6 inch limit, so a crated wellhead or a tall skid is over height long before it is heavy. New production tanks catch people every time. A 400 barrel tank runs about 12 feet in diameter, so lying on its side it is over width before anyone reaches for the height, and on anything but a low deck it is over height as well. Permits are per state and the thresholds do not match across a line: Texas allows 14 feet of height where most states stop at 13 feet 6 inches, which is how a load that left the yard legal becomes permitted freight at the next state line. Sand, cement and bulk drilling products go pneumatic or in containerized boxes and get planned by weight and discharge time, never by floor space. Totes and drums ride van or open deck depending on the hazard class and on what the location has to unload them with.

Can you deliver to a pad site that has no street address?
