What Makes Agricultural Freight Different?

Agriculture runs against two clocks that do not negotiate. The planting window opens when soil temperature and moisture say it opens, and it closes whether or not the fertilizer, the seed and the crop protection arrived. The harvest window is the same deadline in reverse: from the minute a melon is cut or a head of lettuce is packed, every hour in transit is subtracted from the shelf life the receiver is buying. Two Clocks, and Neither One Waits for a Truck

Inputs have a date, not a window. A load of starter fertilizer or seed treatment that arrives the week after the planter has already crossed the field does not become useful again for eleven months. It becomes storage, shrink and money sitting in a shed. That is why input freight is staged and not reacted to: product moves to the retail location, the co-op and the grower's shed while the ground is still too cold, so that the day the agronomist says go, nothing on the list is in transit.

Harvest reverses the logic. Once the crop is cut, the countdown starts and transportation becomes part of the shelf life. Respiration in fresh produce climbs two to three times for every 18 degrees Fahrenheit the product is allowed to warm, so a pallet that leaves the cooler right and then sits two hours on a hot dock arrives with days already spent. Grain runs the same idea on a slower clock: moisture and test weight decide the grade, and a load that sits wet gets docked or turned away at the probe.

The squeeze is that both clocks hit an entire region at once. Everyone plants in the same three or four weeks, everyone cuts in the same three or four weeks, and reefers migrate to whichever growing area is in season, which is exactly when the local shipper needs them. Nothing about that is solved on a load board the afternoon before. It is solved by handing over the agronomic calendar and covering the season's lanes out of a network of 465 plus vetted carriers before the weeks that are tight for everybody.

Temperature Is a Pulp Reading, Not a Setpoint

A reefer holds temperature. It does not remove field heat. Product loaded warm out of the field stays warm inside the box, because the unit is sized to keep a load cold, not to cool it down. So the number that matters at loading is the pulp temperature taken in the product itself, not the display on the nose of the trailer, and the receiver at the other end takes the same reading before signing anything.

Colder is not safer either. Warm season crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and melons take chilling injury below roughly 50 degrees, and the damage does not show at the dock. It shows up two days later at the receiver as pitting, water soaking and fruit that will not ripen. Leafy and cole crops want the opposite, just above freezing at high humidity. The setpoint comes from the commodity, and fresh produce runs continuous air rather than a cycling unit, because a fan that shuts off between cycles lets the load stratify.

Airflow is a loading decision. Cold air has to move through the pallets and back to the bulkhead, so the return air path stays clear, the chute stays intact, and pallets are patterned to let air work instead of dead ending into a solid wall of boxes. Mixed loads add one more rule: ethylene producers such as apples, melons and ripening tomatoes do not ride with ethylene sensitive product such as leafy greens, broccoli and cucumbers, or the sensitive half yellows and turns bitter on a trailer that never left its setpoint.

Placards, Prior Loads and the Paper That Rides Along

Crop protection chemistry is a hazmat conversation before it is a freight conversation, and the hazard class comes from the formulation, not from the crop or the name on the jug. Solvent based emulsifiable concentrates commonly ship as Class 3 flammable liquids, several actives ship as Division 6.1 toxics, ammonium nitrate based product is a 5.1 oxidizer, and plenty of formulations fall in Class 9 as environmentally hazardous substances because of aquatic toxicity, while some water based formulations are not regulated for transport at all. Where it is regulated, placarding generally starts once the aggregate gross weight of that material on the trailer passes 1,001 pounds, with Class 9 as the exception that catches people out, since the Class 9 placard is not required in domestic highway transport even though the markings and the shipping papers still are. Those papers carry the UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class and packing group, along with emergency response information and a 24 hour emergency telephone number, and the driver holds a hazmat endorsement.

One rule reorganizes more ag loads than any other: poison class material may not be transported in the same vehicle with foodstuffs, feed or edible material unless it is packaged and separated exactly as the regulation requires. In practice, the pesticide and the feed do not share the trailer. Neither does treated seed, which is dyed and tagged not for food, feed or oil purposes precisely because it can never end up in a grain channel, so it does not ride ahead of a feed or grain load without a documented washout.

Human and animal food freight, which on this page means produce, feed and feed ingredients, also sits under sanitary transportation requirements, and those are less about the truck than about what is written down before the truck moves. The shipper specifies the temperature and the sanitary conditions in writing, and the carrier is expected to have the prior cargo and washout information available when the shipper asks for it. How Ag Freight Fails in Transit, and What Prevents It

Bulk bags fail by slumping. A one ton FIBC is a fabric bag with no structure of its own, so it lifts by all four loops, it does not stack unless it is rated to, and if it is not blocked and braced it leans into its neighbor over the first hundred miles until the whole floor load is out of shape and a seam tears. Fertilizer also weighs out long before it cubes out: twenty some one ton bags and a van is at legal weight with half its cube empty, so the bags get placed for axle distribution instead of packed front to back. Urea and ammonium blends are hygroscopic on top of that, and a damp trailer floor or a tarp that ponds water turns a free flowing blend into a cake somebody has to break up by hand.

Hay fails by heating. Small squares baled much above 20 percent moisture, and large squares baled above the mid teens, keep respiring and generate heat in the stack, which in the worst case ends in spontaneous combustion, and a tarp pulled tight over a wet bale seals the moisture in instead of letting it breathe. Baled forage is also a light, tall load that reaches legal height before it reaches legal weight, and width allowances for hay are a state by state patchwork, so the route decides the stack. General cargo securement math still applies: aggregate working load limit of at least half the weight of the cargo, with tiedown counts set by article length and weight.

Irrigation pipe fails by over securement. PVC is stiff, thin walled and unforgiving of point loads, so a strap cinched straight over a bare bundle ovalizes the top run, and the cracks show up at the fittings rather than under the strap. Pipe rides fully supported, with edge protection and even tension, and cold weather makes it more brittle, not less. Produce, meanwhile, fails quietly. A blocked return air bulkhead, a unit switched to cycling, or two hours parked at a hot dock does not look like damage on the seal, it looks like a rejected load and a claim argued from whatever temperature record exists. So the seal, the pulp temps and the condition get documented at pickup and again at delivery, because that record is the entire argument later.
