What an Oilfield Materials Delivery Has to Satisfy

These come from the operation, the regulations and the density of the product, not from a carrier's preference. Settle them and the load is quotable.

RequirementThe specificationWhat it means for the load
Delivery windowChained delivery against a pump schedule or a rig program, with an arrival hour the supervisor can plan around, not a day on a calendarLoads are sequenced so the next truck is moving before the one on location is empty, with a staging point close enough to release on hours of notice
Site addressA lease name, a pad name and GPS coordinates. No dock, no street address, and often no usable cell signal on the last stretchCoordinates, gate contact and approach are confirmed with the driver before dispatch, and the arrival hour is handed to location while there is still coverage
Road and approachCaliche lease road, cattle guards, low water crossings, and a turnaround the trailer can actually use. Conditions change after rainThe approach is surveyed for the trailer and re checked the morning of, because a loaded deck in a soft rut is a recovery, not a delay
Site safetyGate sign in and site orientation, flame resistant clothing, hard hat, glasses, gloves, steel toes, a personal H2S monitor in sour areas, lease road speed limitsSite rules are confirmed with the carrier before the assignment, so the driver arrives with the gear and the orientation done instead of arguing at the guard shack
OCTG documentationA tally with joint count and footage, plus heat numbers and mill certificates traceable to the joints on that loadThe tally travels with the load and is signed at both ends, so a short count is settled at the pad and not three weeks later against a string already in the hole
HandlingThread protectors on the pin and box of every joint, bolsters with stakes standing, wood dunnage between nested tiers, nothing free to roll. Coated pipe on padded bolsters and nylon slingsThe loading pattern is agreed before the truck goes under the hook, because the damage that costs money on this freight happens at the two ends of the joint
SecurementArticles over 10 feet take two tiedowns for the first 10 feet plus one for each additional 10 feet or part of it, with combined working load limit at least half the cargo weightTiedown count and blocking are set against joint length and load weight, and roll restraint is checked as its own item rather than assumed from the straps
Weight and axlesThis cargo weighs out long before it cubes out. Mid size casing runs near 880 pounds a joint, and barite is heavy enough that a trailer is full at half a deckLoad plans come back with the axle math done, because dense product concentrated over a short run of deck goes over on the drives while the gross still reads legal
PermitsOver 8 feet 6 inches wide, or over the state height limit, means an oversize permit, a routed trip and escorts where the dimension calls for them. A 400 barrel tank is over width lying downPermits, route and escorts are arranged inside the plan, with travel time restrictions built into the arrival hour instead of discovered at a scale
Hazardous materialsSection 14 of the current SDS revision. Placards once hazardous material on the vehicle passes 1,001 pounds aggregate for most classes, shipping paper within reach, a monitored emergency response number, and a driver holding the hazmat endorsementClass, segregation and equipment are settled before dispatch, and the paper, the package marks and the placards are checked against each other rather than assumed
TemperatureWater based chemistry freezes, and a broken emulsion is off spec product rather than late product. Sand and cement need a dry, clean bulk tankFreeze protection and the prior load in a bulk tank are decided when the load is planned, not when the forecast turns

Deck Choice Comes From the Joint, the Diameter and the Discharge

Flatbed is the workhorse: bundled OCTG, line pipe, palletized product, super sacks and rig mats all ride open deck on bolsters with the stakes standing. Step deck picks up where height runs out, and it runs out sooner than people expect, because a standard deck leaves you roughly eight and a half feet of freight under a 13 foot 6 inch limit, so a crated wellhead or a tall skid is over height long before it is heavy. New production tanks catch people every time. A 400 barrel tank runs about 12 feet in diameter, so lying on its side it is over width before anyone reaches for the height, and on anything but a low deck it is over height as well. Permits are per state and the thresholds do not match across a line: Texas allows 14 feet of height where most states stop at 13 feet 6 inches, which is how a load that left the yard legal becomes permitted freight at the next state line. Sand, cement and bulk drilling products go pneumatic or in containerized boxes and get planned by weight and discharge time, never by floor space. Totes and drums ride van or open deck depending on the hazard class and on what the location has to unload them with.
