The Numbers That Decide a Chemical Shipment

These come from the regulations and from the density of the product, not from a carrier's preference. Settle them and the load is quotable.

RequirementThe specification
What we need from youSection 14 of the current SDS revision: UN number, proper shipping name, class or division, packing group, marine pollutant flag
ConcentrationDecides the class. The same chemistry can be unregulated dilute and Packing Group II concentrated, so the sheet follows the formula, not the product name
Placard threshold1,001 lbs aggregate gross weight of hazardous material in the vehicle for most classes. Poison gas, 6.1 inhalation hazard, 4.3 dangerous when wet and the larger explosive divisions placard at the first carton
Shipping paper sequenceUN number, proper shipping name, hazard class or division, packing group, in that order, plus the technical name in parentheses on n.o.s. entries
RQ and marine pollutantA listed hazardous substance at or above its reportable quantity in one package carries RQ on the paper and the mark, and loses the limited quantity relief from shipping papers
SegregationSet by the table, not by spacing: 4.3 water reactives never with liquid Class 8 acids, Class 3 separated from 5.1 oxidizers so a leak cannot commingle, Zone A poisons never in a vehicle with food or feed
Drum math55 gal drum of water weight product around 500 lbs gross, four per pallet. A van reaches legal weight near 20 pallets, about 80 drums, with floor left over
Tote math275 gal IBC around 2,400 lbs gross, 330 gal near 2,900. Fourteen to sixteen totes is a full truck before the deck fills
Dense productSend the specific gravity. Concentrate loaded tight to the nose puts the drives or the tandems over their limit while the gross is still legal, so it gets spread down the deck
Temperature controlled chemistryOrganic peroxides and self reactive 4.1 carry a control temperature and an emergency temperature. Freeze sensitive blends, 50 percent caustic among them, crystallize in the low 50s F
Residue packagingAn uncleaned, unpurged drum or tote still ships as residue of the last contained material, with the shipping paper and the marks to match
Driver credentialCDL with the H endorsement, backed by a fingerprint based security threat assessment. A substitute driver without it cannot take the load
Parking and drop trailersNo placarded vehicle within 5 ft of the traveled roadway, attended while it sits on a street or a shoulder. A weekend drop in a receiver's yard is a site decision, ask before planning around it
Bulk liquidA cargo tank needs a tank specification matched to the product and a driver with the combined X endorsement, tank plus hazmat. Raise it early, it is a much smaller pool of trucks

The equipment

What This Cargo Rides On

Most chemical freight moves in a dry van, palletized, blocked and braced so drums cannot walk in a panic stop and totes cannot lean. Flatbed takes what will not fit through a dock door or is headed somewhere that has no dock: cylinder racks, tote frames going to a plant yard or a well site, and palletized dry chemistry, tarped when the product is hygroscopic, because caustic beads and calcium chloride cake into one solid block after a single wet run. Refrigerated equipment carries the chemistry that has a temperature attached to it, an organic peroxide with a control temperature or a freeze sensitive latex or caustic solution crossing a northern winter, with the setpoint written into the load instructions and the download available at delivery. Containers handle import and export chemistry between the port, the yard and the plant, where the ocean leg runs under its own dangerous goods rulebook and the box carries its own placards and declaration. Bulk liquid is the one to raise early: the cargo tank specification has to match the product and the driver needs the combined X endorsement, tank plus hazmat, which is a different and much smaller pool of trucks. Tell us the packaging form, drums, pails, totes, cylinders or super sacks, and the equipment answer follows from it.
